Shelly Elia-Shalev, AMFT (she/her)
BIO:
I’m Shelly, she/her, a registered Associate Marriage and Family Therapist (CA#138057) at Spaces Therapy. I work with individuals, couples, and families to help untangle patterns that keep them feeling stuck, address emotional intensity, and explore the deeper stories behind their struggles. I use a thoughtful, relational approach grounded in psychodynamic theory, nervous system awareness, and behavior-based tools. Therapy with me is a space for slowing down, developing insight, and experimenting with new ways of being.
My work is shaped by my background in history, philosophy, and social justice organizing. I believe healing happens not only on the individual level, but also within the context of our communities, identities, and systems. I’m especially drawn to supporting people who are navigating the emotional weight of structural inequities — and those who are trying to live more freely, even in the face of them.
I’ve also trained in equine-assisted therapy — working with horses in a therapeutic setting — which taught me the power of nonverbal communication, presence, and attunement. These lessons continue to guide how I show up with clients: grounded, aware, and tuned into what’s unsaid.
Guiding Principles:
I believe that therapy is a space where trust can be rebuilt — not only in others, but in yourself. Healing often begins by slowing down, noticing what’s present, and giving attention to what’s been long avoided or dismissed.
My practice is grounded in the belief that emotional pain doesn’t arise in a vacuum. We carry stories shaped by early relationships, cultural messages, and systemic forces. Understanding these layers can open the door to deeper self-compassion, agency, and connection.
I bring a spirit of curiosity, warmth, and steady attention to the therapy room. I welcome all parts of you — including the ones that feel too much, too hidden, or too uncertain — and I work collaboratively to help you move through stuckness toward change that feels meaningful and sustainable.
My Style of Therapy:
Trauma-Informed and Body-Aware: I understand how the nervous system holds trauma and stress. I use tools from somatic work, DBT, and mindfulness to help clients manage distress and cultivate a deeper connection to their bodies. My goal is to create a safe space for you to heal from the effects of chronic stress and traumatic experiences.
Curious and Collaborative: I bring a steady, nonjudgmental presence to our work together. We’ll explore the emotional patterns and relational histories that shape your current experiences with curiosity and care, helping you move from stuckness toward meaningful, sustainable change.
Socially Conscious and Inclusive: I believe that mental health is deeply connected to the systems we live in. My work is informed by an understanding of systemic issues and cultural identities, ensuring a space where your full identity is not only welcomed but honored and understood. I am passionate about supporting people who are navigating the emotional weight of structural inequities.
